Journey Home
In the Fall of 2002, the Staff and Board of the Kitchener Waterloo Multicultural Centre decided to turn a decades-old dream into a reality: to find a permanent home for the Multicultural Centre’s Programs and offices.
Many people travel many miles to find their home. For years, the K-W Multicultural Centre searched for a home. And now we’ve found it!
Every year, Waterloo Region benefits greatly from the many new Canadians that choose our community as their new home. A new and improved Centre will help us serve them better and make our community a stronger place.
- A permanent space allows us to accurately budget housing costs, allowing more money for programming, interpretation services and other important community services.
- A new larger Centre offers space for a permanent Information Resource Area, a welcoming area, plus classroom space for English as A Second Language
We work with more than fifty community partners. They report an increased ability to serve clients from diverse backgrounds as a result of their collaboration with us. As the Executive Director, I spend approximately 40% of my time liaising with community partners, and offering educational opportunities on how to manage diversity.
All of this work happens thanks to the dedication of 13 staff members and dozens of hard working volunteers. This work happens in cramped quarters, in borrowed classrooms, at different locations in the City.
We need a permanent space where we can have a resource area, a classroom, a welcoming reception area, a room for our volunteers. It is finally time to unpack our bags, and have our own home so that we can better serve Kitchener Waterloo.
