Peer Support Group

With suppoprt from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, our Centre was able to build relationships within the community's mental health sector in exploring ways to develop Peer Support Groups within cultural/linguistic communities. These groups are often affective in reducing isolation and addressing mental health challenges through the settlement process.

In our evaluations, what is cited most often is that people feel that they are no longer alone in their journey and that, by being together and in speaking their own language, it increases their sense of belonging. Supporters of Peer Support Strategies emphasize the fact that the very nature of peer support is centered on a set of core beliefs, values and principals. In particular, values of mutuality confidentiality, mutual respect and personal responsibility.
